The map below shows the itinerary starting from Hong Kong. The dark red lines show the route taken. All travel was done independently except for the tour of Guilin (with Li River and Yangshuo). The train journeys were from Shanghai to Suzhou to Nanjing and thence the long overnighter to Xi'an. The outline itinerary is:
- Hong Kong <-> Guilin + Li River + Yangshuo tour package; Day trip to Macau
- Hong Kong -> Shanghai -> day trip to Hangzhou
- Shanghai -> Suzhou -> day trip to water town of Tongli
- Suzhou -> Nanjing -> Xi'an -> Beijing

- The famous landscape and views of Guilin in Guangxi province
- Hangzhou, the famed capital of Zhejiang province famous for its picturesque West lake (Xi Hu), the selected pictures taken on a day trip from Shanghai (about a couple of hours by mini-bus)

Still a work in progress - so excuse the improvisory nature of the site and do come back for new episodes.
These are my first digital photos taken with a borrowed Pentax 750Z viewfinder camera (although I have taken colour slides in past travels). It is apparent that I was still learning how to use the camera. I hope despite the technical shortcomings that the special sense of place that China represents has emerged.
